“All politicians seem the same – I’d find it hard to say with certainty what any of the main parties actually stand for and even if I could, I don’t know who I’d trust.”
“It’s all been spin above substance.” “Is anyone actually interested in listening to me and representing my concerns?” etc. etc.
Sounds familiar? I feel the same way myself. That’s why I’m standing as your local Independent candidate for MP in Tatton.
Although I was born in Hampshire and raised and educated in Ireland, I’ve spent 25 years of my life in Antrobus and Pickmere. I know and love the constituency and the people in it. The strength of community spirit is wonderful and I’ve always enjoyed playing my part by being actively involved with local issues, concerns and events – I really believe that you only get out what you put in.
Maybe there’s something genetic in my attitude! My forebear George Tierney (MP 1790 and 1796-1830) earned the nickname ‘the Citizens’ MP’ because of his democratic principles and the idea of ‘power to the people’ is as important to me today as it was to George back then.
Work-wise, my background lay in newspapers before my current job as co-director/owner of a small advertising agency. I’ve worked for entrepreneurs, large organisations and been self-employed. That, combined with my present job with its mix of public and private sector clients, means that I have a rounded understanding of business and the kind of support that would really make a difference in helping to build a stronger, more resilient local economy while protecting the public services we need. I also know a lot about the challenges of balancing work and family life: I’m married with two daughters, the youngest of who is now at Leeds University. Both went through the state school system and many of my friends are teachers, so I’ve got a pretty good grasp of educational and young people’s issues.
Having lived in Tatton for so many years, I also understand the importance of close-knit communities and rural affairs; the need to protect our green belt and countryside while building a sustainable local economy that provides the opportunities and quality of life that we all want.
